Outfit: Garden Variety

One of my pet projects has been to see every forest preserve in my county, and I often use them as settings for my pictures.  I’ve been following an alphabetical list of each place, and so far, I’ve already gotten up to the D’s!  (In fact, I’m at Danada in these pictures.)

Over the weekend, though, I went a little out of order.  I skipped all the way to the W’s and spent my Saturday hiking at Waterfall Glen.  It’s been years since I visited, but I recently joined a Meetup group for hikers, and I decided that a lap around the preserve would be great for my first outing…

DSC_0695And it totally was!  Despite being a little late for the hike, I met up with four other stragglers, and we set off at a quick pace to try and catch up with the rest of the group.  While we never did, it was still so much fun to get to know everyone and take in the sights.  The trail winds around the Argonne National Lab and is buzzing with all kinds of wildlife.  One mile could be dense forest, the next could be open prairie, and the next could be a marshland!

The whole trail is about ten miles long, which was definitely a challenge for me, but the miles seemed to slip past so quickly.  The other hikers and I chatted about everything from the best vegetarian food in Chicago to seeing the northern lights in Alaska to rescuing the perfect pet.  Now and then, we stopped for pictures and to share snacks.  In fact, I was a little sad when we finished the hike!  Thankfully, there are plenty more to walk, and I’m already signed up for another one next month.

What about you?  Have you recently taken up any new hobbies?

  1. Love your dress and the photography. The location is so beautiful! It’s great you are able to pursue your hobby and go around outdoor trips. Monsoons are hitting us hard in here and I a not able to get out of the house. But we do have some outings planned for autumn 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Do drop by my blog as well : http://styleovercoffee.com 🙂

    1. Thank you! It’s been nice to get out and enjoy the outdoors. I’m sorry you’re stuck inside! I hope the monsoon season ends soon!

    1. Thank you! One of the reasons I love being a woman is getting to just throw one piece of clothing over my head and go out 🙂

  2. Oh wow, what a lovely theme for a pet project, Devinne!
Maybe I should have something like that too this holiday, maybe visit all the parks in Jakarta. Thanks for the idea!
That hike sounds like such a fun thing to do. Wish you’d had some photos of the experience. I’ve hiked only once in my—as far as I recall—and it was exhausting but SOOO worth it 😉

    1. You should totally do it!! If you can, I’d love to see pictures of the parks in Jakarta. I only took one photo on my hike because we were going so fast and only stopped for one break!

  3. I really love all the different poses in this post — you’re inspiring me to switch it up a little if it ever cools down enough to go out and take some blog photos! This place sounds terrific — and what a wonderful goal to see all the preserves!

    1. I’ll tell you a secret–before I go out to take pictures, I always consult a list I made of different poses/ideas that I’ve seen on Instagram!

  4. I’ve been thinking about joining some meetups for quite a long time but something has always stopped me. There is a hiking group I’ve been meaning to join and this post might have given me the push to actually go to a meetup!
