One of my pet projects has been to see every forest preserve in my county, and I often use them as settings for my pictures. I’ve been following an alphabetical list of each place, and so far, I’ve already gotten up to the D’s! (In fact, I’m at Danada in these pictures.)
Over the weekend, though, I went a little out of order. I skipped all the way to the W’s and spent my Saturday hiking at Waterfall Glen. It’s been years since I visited, but I recently joined a Meetup group for hikers, and I decided that a lap around the preserve would be great for my first outing…
And it totally was! Despite being a little late for the hike, I met up with four other stragglers, and we set off at a quick pace to try and catch up with the rest of the group. While we never did, it was still so much fun to get to know everyone and take in the sights. The trail winds around the Argonne National Lab and is buzzing with all kinds of wildlife. One mile could be dense forest, the next could be open prairie, and the next could be a marshland!
The whole trail is about ten miles long, which was definitely a challenge for me, but the miles seemed to slip past so quickly. The other hikers and I chatted about everything from the best vegetarian food in Chicago to seeing the northern lights in Alaska to rescuing the perfect pet. Now and then, we stopped for pictures and to share snacks. In fact, I was a little sad when we finished the hike! Thankfully, there are plenty more to walk, and I’m already signed up for another one next month.
