Outfit: Forever Yellow

Forever Yellow Over the weekend, I was spending a lot of time analyzing some of my favorite bloggers’ pictures and trying to figure out just what made them so great. on this occasion I will discuss about Forever Yellow. While they each have distinctive styles, some of the things that struck me were the beautiful composition of each photo as well as the breathtaking use of color. While I have a long way to go before I develop some great composing skills (hi, I’m too much of a ham at the moment), I did figure out a way to really punch up the color in all the right places. For so long, I’ve been de-saturating my pictures, trying to make them look more “vintage,” but I’ve realized how important it is to use color to draw the eye in. After some careful Google research, I learned about the Vibrance slider in…

Outfit: Hurry Down the Chimney

Outfit I don’t know if you guys can tell with my outfit, but these photos were shot with my brand new 50mm lens! I’d been lusting after one for the last few months, and I finally decided to go for it. When I first bought my DSLR back in the spring, I accompanied it with a decent 35mm lens.  I didn’t realize then that a 50mm is much better suited for style blogging, but boy, can I see the difference now. I don’t know much about cameras, but what I do know is that a 50mm makes the background a little blurrier than a 35mm, which means the subject is in sharper focus. It makes a lot of sense that most style bloggers are using 50mm lenses because it helps keep the outfit front and center, so to speak. Are any of you Book of Deer fans?  What’s your favorite collection…

What’s in My March Ipsy Bag?

Subscription services are one of my biggest weaknesses.  The idea that all kinds of wonderful, handpicked-for-me things can be shipped to my door without any work on my part is extremely appealing.  I can put my feet up, click around, and POOF!  There’s a box of snacks/clothes/dog toys waiting to be opened! Miraculously, I’ve been able to stave off my subscription cravings for a long time, but then I started thinking about Ipsy.  And about how much I’d love to get little lipsticks and eye shadows in a cute bag each month.  So, without much hesitation, I bought myself a whole year of these bags, and I thought I’d share with you the things I got! For those of you who haven’t heard of Ipsy, it’s a makeup subscription service that sends you a handful of goodies, from makeup to skincare to hair products, all in a sweet pouch each month.…

Why I’m Disabling Comments

Disabling Comments Last week, I went on a short break from Mox and Socks, and it was a huge help.  Not only did I have a little more time to relax, but I had some time to think about what I want from this blog.  I think a lot of you know that I struggle with the stress that can come with blogging, and I decided that one way I can reduce that anxiety is by closing down the comments on my future posts. I really, truly, absolutely care about and appreciate the things you say to me whenever I post outfit pictures or tutorials or the like–it means the world that you like what I’m doing and care enough to tell me that. My personal blogging philosophy has, for a long time, included the conviction that I should always respond to and comment back on other people’s blogs.  Finding…

Outfit: Out with a Bang Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters, I’ve had bangs for a very, very long time. With the exception of a few experiments in high school and college, I’ve been rocking this ‘do since I was just a toddler with wispy blonde ringlets. Having bangs feels so me, so crucial to my appearance and even my identity. So why on earth would I grow them out? I realized that I’ve been using my bangs to hide my face.  Whenever I’ve thought about growing them out, I look back at pictures of me when I didn’t have bangs, and I honestly think I’m ugly. Not so with bangs!  They’ve always made me feel cute.  They soften my hard Irish bone structure and hide my poorly-maintained eyebrows.  And besides, at my height, I’ll never be sexy, so I may as well be as cute as possible, right? WRONG!  Having this blog for over a year has made me…

Outfit: Village Life

Village Life, Village Life, Lately I’ve become a huge fan of Mode and the City, an impossibly chic lifestyle and fashion blog based in France.  It’s run by a lovely young woman known only as Daphne, and while I can’t read what she writes. I can definitely admire her style! It’s exactly what I’ve always imagined Parisian style to be–simple, chic, perfectly tailored, and classic. I wanted to incorporate some of those design elements into my outfit today, but do it in the Mox and Socks way.  I can’t see Daphne wearing a fuzzy blue sweater covered in hearts (and dog hair…), but I certainly can envision her in cigarette jeans with a ribbon in her hair!
